Sterling Howell has created and led American and local history focused tours for over 15 years. He has guided groups of teachers and students through the monuments, memorials, museums, and metro-system of Washington, DC. For 8 years, he educated visitors to James Madison’s Montpelier on the political philosophy underpinning the US Constitution and the history and legacies of slavery in America and the local area. Most recently, he led walking tours and managed public programs for the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society.
Sterling hails from tobacco country in eastern NC. He studied sociology at NC State University, and earned a Master’s Degree from UNC-Greensboro, where his research focused on law, society, and culture. He continued his postgraduate research at the University of Virginia. There, his interests took a historical turn, and he ultimately found his calling in public history.
Originally thinking he would only be in the area for a brief stint for graduate school, Sterling fell in love with all things Central Virginia — the rich history, the natural beauty, and the people. When not guiding travelers through time, Sterling can be found kayaking, hiking mountain trails with his furry sidekick Valley, teaching yoga classes, talking about Virginia wine, or watching sports with friends.
